Thus, states have stipulated punitive measures against persons who trade, possess or use the illicit drugs. They see drug abuse as a great menace in the society. They also dispute legalization of drugs arguing that this would lower prices of hard drugs and subsequently increase addiction rates. Also, they contend that legalization would facilitate large companies to venture in the business and spread the drugs all corner s of the world.However, legalizing drugs does not necessarily mean that the society will be put in danger and that the drugs will be abused even more. On the contrary, recent studies indicate that in countries where the drugs have been legalized; the overall effects of drug abuse have reduced significantly. For instance, many South American countries have adopted this model and the society is happy about the new policy. In fact this development in South America influenced the states of Washington and Colorado in USA to vote for systemic legal regulation of sale of drugs. For the truth is, for the past 50 years, the International Community has always insisted on the prohibition of drugs but this policy has been futile.
